Yan Palmer + Ryan Muirhead

rYAN HUMN Shop

Have you been wanting to slow down and connect with yourself and your photo subject? Have you been aching to make more meaningful work? Are you unsure how to use a light meter? How about which film camera to use? Does it really matter where you get your film developed and scanned?

Yan and Ryan will be spending 2.5 days to guide and teach you all things film and ways to connect with your photo subject and make more meaningful work.

Who’s in?

I really can’t fully put into words what the rYan HUMN workshop did for me. It was one of those moments where everything comes together to give you clarity you’ve been looking for.
Ryan and Yan’s philosophies on life and art and photography resonated with me so much, and reminded me why I started photographing and made photos that I truly cherish. I’m glad I took this chance on myself.
— Paul Mannone

Their film based photo work, though notedly different in subject and style, developed along side one another as they explored similar themes--not how to tell THE truth, but perhaps how to touch something that resembled a truth, to feel truth's hot whisper for a moment by asking honest questions--with their lenses, their relationships, and their words.

This is a workshop where Yan and Ryan finally come together, to share where their parallel quests took them; the knowledge they gleaned practically, photographically, and philosophically. They hope to do so in a way that assists you in your own quest for meaning.

Ryan and Yan will both conduct a shoot for the students to observe their processes and how they interact with their subjects.

*due to the subject matter, we are limiting the number in attendance to foster an intimate environment

Still reeling from the amazing rYan HUMN workshop I attended last weekend in NYC. Ryan and Yan not only shared their talent and insight but shared their hearts and souls with us.
— Alice Thigpen

There will also be free shooting time for students to shoot on their own, and/or have Ryan and Yan assist them in making images.

THAT’S NOT ALL

Indie Film Lab will be offering 20% off  any film shot at the workshop.

Each student will get their portrait taken by either Ryan or Yan if they choose to.

Ryan

Will teach you how to use a spot meter so you can set your exposures with confidence and take the guesswork out of shooting film, plus how to avoid imposter syndrome by drawing inspiration from other mediums, plus how to take personal and meaningful images without any ideas for photos.

Yan

Yan will teach how to shoot kids and families on film, plus how to deal with motion and slow focusing film cameras, plus about art as transformation, plus about overcoming fears, plus how to not lose your artist self in running a business, plus how to transmute pain into beauty, plus about creative tension + paradox.

the participants

This workshop attracts people with golden hearts.

People who end up genuinely adoring each other and bonding and forming friendships that extend well beyond a few days.

These people, while often they make incredible, inspiring art, are also normal people just like you, reading this page right now. And they are just as hungry for the truth, art, story, authenticity, and weirdness.

It was a great creativity reset after a stressful year.

My soul felt deep rest and ease. The people that are attracted to rYan are amazing, and a bonus on top of the sweet emotional and technical photo education.
— Lydia Johnston

I signed up for a workshop with Ryan and Yan in 2020 but Covid wasn’t having it. So instead we met up this summer in Portland for the rescheduled date. It was so nice to talk about life and art, this time from a new emotional headspace that allowed me to have a completely different takeaway from the experience.
— Emilio Mesa

rYan - the mythology

Once upon a time Ryan was teaching a workshop in Georgia and a gentleman in attendance came up to him and said “I think you might be the same person as this other photographer I know....”

The same thing happened to Yan. On more than one occasion.

At the time, Ryan and Yan had similar reactions; a sort of sad smile. A downward, twitching gaze. Having met and formed a friendship long ago in the holy photographer lands of Utah, they already knew this about one another.

Ryan and Yan didn't actually believe they were all that identical, but they knew they shared some major qualities in common beyond the conservative culture they were  raised in. These qualities were: complete uncertainty about all things, an inability to fake it, whatever "it," is, and an overwhelming sense that they were terrible at, well, LIFE, and how to human in general.

Also, they both liked art. A Lot.

WHY?

So you don't have to fake it, whatever "it," is, ever again. Or at least a lot less. That way, even if we never conclude how to do this human thing right, we can at least say we made SOMETHING. Was it art? Maybe. Was it something that helped? We want to believe and hope it does.  But all we can really claim, is that it's something that came from giving figuring "human," out, our best shot. (Also, we used film and will tell you precisely how to use it too).

Join Yan Palmer and Ryan Muirhead for an in-person workshop that includes classroom learning, demonstrations, and guided shoots.

TOGETHER they will teach how to help you identify what it is that matters to you in your work and how to deliberately work in a way to achieve that. Why both Yan and Ryan shoot film and how that plays into the way they want their shoots to go, and their work to feel. How working with a professional film lab gets the results they want. Choosing the right camera for the type of work you want to make, no matter what your budget is. And when to use different types of film to achieve the look and feel you want.

This workshop is for you if:

  • you want your work to center on authentic connection between yourself and subject matter

  • you want to learn how to begin shooting film or become better at it

  • you want to explore complex themes with your creative or photographic process
